Music therapy with children

Children seem particularly motivated to express themselves using music. The music therapist aims to build a relationship with the child through music and sounds rather than words. As the relationship develops this can lead to benefits such as increased eye-contact and vocal sounds, improved concentration span and social interaction, reduced anxiety and increased confidence. Although any children may benefit from the opportunity to express themselves through music, music therapy is often particularly beneficial for children with autistic spectrum disorders, emotional and behavioural difficulties, physical disabilities, learning difficulties, sensory impairment and communication difficulties.

“ Sound and music are Alex’s world. Music therapy gives him a chance to influence it and MusicSpace provides a receptive, accepting place for him to express himself and interact without interruption “ parent of a child with multi-needs and sensory impairments

“ There is no doubt that my daughter benefited enormously from her music therapy. The skilled therapist was able to uncover aspects of her personality which were previously hidden and may have remained so. I have seen my child move from a position where she was thought to have little or no ability to play and imagine, to one where she has been able to demonstrate a rich imagination and sense of fun. She is now able to take this enjoyment and learning into everyday life.” mother of a child with complex communication difficulties
