Music therapy in day centres

“The opportunity for music therapy gives our clients (many of whom are non-verbal and/or have a sensory impairment) the chance of individual quality time, building up a relationship in a positive way. These sessions have opened up new channels of communication for our clients to feel, to enjoy and to experiment with music in all its forms.” Group leader, day centre

As part of our outreach service, MusicSpace works in a variety of different adult day-care settings. Our therapists work flexibly according to the needs of the individuals and the setting and bring a wide range of musical instruments with them. Much of the work is with people who have learning difficulties or physical disabilities. Our team is also available for developing mental health work. Sometimes therapists work on specific projects with particular client groups.

At one of the day centres we work in for people with physical disabilities, our therapist combines music improvisation with reminiscence work in small groups to access memories of the past and to begin to address the changes in physical capabilities. She also works with a small group of people with a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis using music, guided imagery and relaxation techniques. She comments,

“The group members have told me that they find it a useful space within which to express their feelings and to talk about the impact their disability can have on their families and carers."
